It's that special time if year - and we only get to enjoy it for a day or two. The combination of passing days, cool temperatures and gusty winds have made the local cherry trees lose their petals en masse. So the areas beneath the trees look as if they are covered in pink snow!
Our local cherry trees pale in comparison to those that grace Sakura Park in Manhattan and the one that line the rim of the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. Japan gave 3,020 cherry blossom trees as a gift to the United States in 1912 to celebrate the nations' then-growing friendship. Sakura is the Japanese word for flowering cherry blossom.
So, farewell Sakura! See you again next year!
