Strahm Sells!: On my way to 100,000 points, I've never eaten a Twinkie!

On my way to 100,000 points, I've never eaten a Twinkie!

ActiveRain 100000 pointsThere are a lot of posts here on ActiveRain where people memorialize certain point milestones they have achieved.  And there have been a number of posts saying that is self-serving.

Well, we are in the real estate business, and selling ourselves is part of the job.  So I understand why people proudly post 100,000 points, 250,000 points, 500,000 points or more.

I've always said that I am not here for the points.  I'm here to learn from my peers, get my name out in the public and have a great time.  I joined ActiveRain on February 11, 2010.  In those five or so months, I have learned much, had a lot of laughs, and met some really great people.

And along the way, I happened to break that 100,000 point barrier.  So what does that mean to me here?  Not a whole heck of a lot.  There are thousands of members that have less points than me, and thousands that have more points than me.  That makes me kind of average.  But that nice, round 100,000 number did get me thinking about numbers.  So here are a few numbers that put it in perspective.

175,000           Cars General Motors sells per month

238,857           Miles to the moon

345,000           Births in the United States per month

425,000           Santa Cruz County Average home price

560,000           Words in War and Peace

646,844           Population of North Dakota

787,000           YouTube Videos watched per minute

826,329           U.S. Automobile deaths over last 20 years

908,000           Words in the English language

1,071,840        Feet from New York City to Baltimore Maryland

1,185,000        Population of Swaziland

1,200,000        People who lost unemployment benefits in June

1,370,000        Twinkies eaten daily

Interesting numbers, all.  But the one that really got me was 1,370,000 Twinkies eaten daily. 1.3 million!  I have never contributed to that number because I have never eaten a Twinkie in my life!  When I was growing up, we were more of a Yodel and Ho-Ho family.  And Twinkies looked even too artificial for me, an absolute connoisseur of junk food, to stomach.

So it looks like I'm here to stay.  And blog more, and have a great time with my peers.  And maybe check in with a few more mindless statistics next time I reach a round number.

I'm going to click on "Post Blog Entry" now.  And wonder, as I always do, if this is a post that will get any comments.  And if I do, something tells me they are all going to ell me that I don't know what I'm missing by not eating Twinkies!

You are not missing ANYTHING by not eating Twinkies!  I don't get me started on those fried Twinkies!  Heart attack to go is what they should be called.  (BTW:  Even though the points don't matter, congrats.  They do indicate a lot of blogging and contributions to the community and that is worthy of commendation!)

Wallace - Oh, no!  Please don't compare me to a murderer!

Richard,

Congratulations on hitting that 100k mark.

In addition to sharing you name, I have something else in common, in that I also have never eaten a Twinkie, and never intend on doing so.

I wish I understood comment # 6.  Can anyone explain?

Posted by Richard Weeks, REALTOR®, Broker almost 9 years ago

Fernando - I wonder if it's enough Twinkies to build a house with?

Richard W. - We should start the Richards Who Don't Eat Twinkies club!  As to the #6 comment, it looks like Barbara finds a quote every day and posts it to 10 blogs.  I guess it gets her 250 points -- but not much else!

Growing up in the Philly suburbs in Souderton, we never so much as had Twinkies or Yodels in the house.  My parents were Tastykake snobs.  If it wasn't a Butterscotch Krimpet, Tandy Take or Tasty Klair it wasn't making it into my Yoda lunch box.

I have never had a Twinkie either and I think my window for considering even trying one has been shut for some time.  Maybe I'll scarf one down in the next life.  After all I did hear somewhere that Twinkies are non-biodegradable and have a shelf life of something like 1.3 million years.

Keith - Tasktykakes are the BEST!  I didn't write about them because I thought most people wouldn't know what they are.  I like the Jelly Krimpets better than the butterscotch ones.  But would kill fir a Tandy Take!  Or a Lemon Pie . . .

Congrats on the 100K!  If anyone has read the book "Deconstructing the Twinkie" they would never have another urge for one.  Here's just some of what you are missing by never having one:

  • Shortening (in the form of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and/or beef fat) is the main ingredient.
  • Polysorbate 60 is a gooey substance that helps replace cream and eggs at a fraction of the cost. It's derived from corn, palm oil and petroleum.
  • Cellulose gum gives the crème filling a smooth, slippery feel.  YUM!  Cellulose gum!
  • Artificial vanillin is synthesized in petrochemical plants. The real thing comes from finicky tropical orchids that are pollinated by hand on the one day they bloom.
  • Lecithin is an emulsifier made from soy. It's also used in paint to keep pigments evenly dispersed.
  • Diacetyl mimics the taste of butter, since the real stuff would go rancid on a store shelf.
  • Cornstarch is a common thickener. But it's more often used to make cardboard and packing peanuts.
  • Yellow No. 5, Red No. 40 give the cake the golden look of eggs.
  • Sorbic acid, the only actual preservative in Twinkies, comes from petroleum.

Oops, I made most of my comment about the twinkies just like you said.  :)

Kristen - I'm not sure I've ever been so grossed out.  And fascinated at the same time!

Russel - According to the US Census Bureau, there will be 4,268,000 births in the US in 2010 and 2,586,000 deaths.  And 1,338,000 net migrations (more immigrants than people leaving).  With a population today of 310,223,00, the U.S. is expected to have a population of 439,010 by 2050.  Wow!  I liked Dind Dongs, too!

They're really good frozen, too, those Twinkies. Sort of like a light pound cake with filling a bit better than whipped cream. Classic.

Congrats on the milestone. Those are some very interesting stats.

I must confess, I have eaten a Twinkie or two when I was younger. I can't say that I would eat one now, unless I had absolutely nothing else to choose from and I was starving. Let's just say, I would pick a Ho-Ho, Yodel, Ring Ding or a Devil Dog over a Twinkie anyday. ;-)

100,000 points since February???  I should be there in a day or two and it only took me four years.  Guess I'm a little slow.  Congratulations on being focused.  As for Twinkies, I used to eat them, along with every other kind of garbage I could stuff in my mouth.  However, years ago before they all tasted the same, and like chemicals, there was nothing like a devil dog with a thick layer of cream and a tall, cold glass of milk.

Thanks Joshua!

Laurie - I'm not sure whether I should bare this part of me in public -- but I really dislike milk!

Sheldon - What would AR be without points?  A very different place.  I have a British mother -- does that count for anything?

Scott - I'll be looking out for your milestone!

Thanks Judy.  From your list of snacks, it sounds like you are a bit of a chocoholic!

Richard W - Thanks.  I can only dream about point totals like yous.

Geri - Wow, I must be in the minority when it comes to milk!  Best wishes for your impending 100K.

Thanks, Susan!

Inna!  One of the people I'm happiest to have found here!  Junk food challenged?  I'd rather think I'm just the arbiter of good junk food taste.  Now THERE'S an oxymoron!

Richard I - With my luck, the bottom shelf price is a pack of Twinkies!

Matt - I think I'm going into diabetic shock just thinking about that combination!

Joni - What a special memory!  But can I just have the strawberries and whipped cream?

Sharon - Sounds like a Far Side cartoon!

Michael P. - Thank you!

Terry - I think one reason I'm never going to try one now is -- what happens if I like them??  I'd kick myself for missing out all these years!

Thanks, Steve.  I wonder if Hostess tracks the age group of the people that eat the Twinkies.  I'm guessing the average age doesn't even hit double digits.

Steve P. - Thank you.  Now can you please take your Hot and Humid summer weather back to Florida where it belongs?  We're sick of it here already . . .

Marc - I guess it would be more financially rewarding than playing the numbers!

Michel S - I do believe I've just been called a Ho!  Can't say that's ever happened before . . .

Thank you, Christa!

Michael P - I can only dream about #1 in my county.  There's a heavy hitter here who deserves his #1 spot!

Hi Richard,

Cute post (and I never had a Twinkie either - my mom wouldn't buy that stuff). Yes, points are nice and you have done it the right way - you earned them through original, thoughtful, entertaining blogs and comments. Kudos to you to achieve such a milestone in such a short period of time. Maybe we'll make it there by Christmas!
